Low Cost
Housing Suggestions
for the Nation's Second Annual Disability Pride Parade in Chicago, Illinois
GENERAL INFORMATION
**The Disability
Pride Parade Planning Committee wishes to thank the Chicago March 20 Anti-War
Organizing Coalition and the Society for Disability Studies for allowing
us to adapt their existing housing lists to meet our specific needs.
As Chicago holds
many business conventions which sometimes make getting housing difficult
(particularly during the summer months), it is strongly recommended that
out of town parade attendees make their hotel/motel reservations as soon
as possible. Included in the list below also are low-cost hostels and
university residences.
Wherever possible,
we have indicated the number of accessible rooms available according to
facility representatives. It is the responsibility of all out of town
parade attendees, however, to arrange their own lodging and to ensure
the accessibility of their lodging of choice. To assist with this, the
Disability Pride Parade Planning Committee is including a copy of the
U.S. Department of Justice's ADA Checklist for New Lodging Facilities
in this packet. You can also access it at: http://www.ada.ufl.edu/ADAcd/cdpages/PDF_PUBS/HOTELCK/HSURVEY.PDF
We strongly encourage out of town parade attendees to fax this checklist
to potential lodging sites ahead of time, and receive a response before
making a reservation.
When planning your
trip from your lodging to the parade line-up/start, please note that Chicago
is a very large city geographically, and so getting around can take a
considerable amount of time. For more information on transportation options,
please refer to the enclosed Transportation handout.
Inclusion of a facility
on this list does not constitute approval or endorsement of that facility
by the Disability Pride Parade Planning Committee. Also, prices listed
are subject to change, so be sure to inquire about pricing for the month
of July when you contact the facility in question.

GETTING TO/FROM
THE AIRPORT
Continental Airport
Express
This airport shuttle service is readily available at the airport
for riders who can board vans and buses. This service also offers wheelchair
accessible vans if reservations are phoned in no later than the day before
pick-up is needed. A one-way trip between O'Hare Airport and the downtown
hotels is $17.00. The trip between Midway Airport and downtown is a bit
less costly. To reserve a ride or to obtain more information, call (800)
654-7871.
Standard taxi
service is readily available at both airports. To reserve accessible
taxis, call any of the following companies (they must be reserved in advance),
or call the Chicago Accessible Taxicab Service toll-free at 1-800-281-4466.
You need to specify whether you use a wheelchair, scooter or other mobility
device.

Public Transportation
From O'Hare Airport
From the lower level baggage area, follow the signs downstairs to the
"el," Chicago's subway. From a machine in the station, you will
want to purchase a subway card worth at least $1.80 ($3.60 for the round
trip travel back to the airport). Allow yourself approximately 1 hour
or more for transit time to and from the airport. To return to the airport
after the parade, take the Blue Line train all the way to the end of the
line at O'Hare Airport.
Public Transportation
From Midway Airport
Follow the signs in the airport to the "el," Chicago's subway.
From a machine in the station, you will want to purchase a subway card
worth at least $1.50 ($3 for the round trip travel back to the airport).
Allow yourself at least one hour and 15 minutes transit time. To return
to the airport after the parade, take the Orange Line train all the way
to the end of the line at Midway Airport.
GETTING AROUND
CHICAGO
If you would like
information about public transportation in the Chicago area, call (312)
836-7000. (There are accessible public commuter trains and buses traveling
between airports and downtown but we hear that break-downs and equipment
problems can leave guests stranded on their way to the city if they don't
know how to work the systems, so consider these options carefully. Within
the downtown area, however, public buses are quite reliable.)
If you are a registered
paratransit rider in your state and would like to extend your paratransit
eligibility to Chicago while visiting here, call (312) 432-7025, ext.
6652 (Ms. Petty), or ext. 6643. To receive paratransit service, all visitors
must present documentation that they are ADA paratransit eligible for
the jurisdiction in which they reside. If a visitor is unable to present
such documentation, the CTA will require documentation of residence and/or
disability. Visitors will not be provided service for more than 21 days
from the date of the first paratransit trip.
